Applied MSc in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence – Paris Campus
Autumn 2018

After successfully completing the program at DSTI, I am now a Data Science Intern in Natural-Language Processing (NLP) at Yseop. The company specializes in natural language generation (NLG) and builds artificially intelligent models capable of understanding and generating coherent texts for the Fintech and Pharma markets.

My work consists in overseeing these models end-to-end and supervising their learning. An important part of my job is cleaning big chunks of texts to generate augmented datasets, coding the model, training it, evaluating its performance, and fine-tuning it for better results.

I use Python and Java as main programming languages, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and ElasticSearch/MySQL for data storage. The data I deal with is often unstructured, so it is difficult to define a unique format for it. But some of the data types I work with include CSV files, website content (HTML), plaintext, PDF or Word reports, and JSON/XML data.

The people at Yseop are very friendly and welcoming. They made me feel like one of them from day one and quickly integrated me into the team. The team is well-balanced between linguists with glowing academic backgrounds and hardcore developers and scientists with plenty of industrial experience. Both groups gel well together and communicate effectively and efficiently, all of which makes the workplace a continual learning environment.

The most challenging part of my work is cleaning the data. Since the models in place usually require a rigid input data format, it is sometimes hard to achieve that with text since it is mostly unstructured.

I am thankful for the education I received at DSTI since it has helped me move seamlessly into my position at Yseop. I use skills I’ve acquired and polished at the school on a regular basis – from statistical analysis to building deep learning models and scaling architecture on AWS.

My journey at DSTI did more than just help me land a dream job – it showed me there is always room to learn in the field of Data Science.
